Subject: USS Stein (FF-1065) I would like to say "Hi" to all my former shipmates from The USS Stein. I have many great memories from my time aboard. I served aboard the during the '78 -'79 Wespac cruise. We were in Somalia when the Iranian Hostage Crisis broke and spent weeks at both Gonzo station and Kermit station. And a few weeks at Diego Garcia while our ships propellor was replaced. We were part of the Midway battle group on the way out and escorted the Kitty Hawk home. I became a trusty shellback on that cruise crossing the equator on our way to Australia.. I was also part of the crew during our one year drydock refitting in Portland, Oregon. During that time Mount St. Helens exploded I was on watch on deck to see it go up. I have teriffic memories of my time on Stein and especially the places we got to see on Wespac: Kenya, Australia, Subic Bay Phillipines. I will be sending lots of pictures so the picture section should fill up soon. I would like to contact any of the following shipmates, If you know any of these guys, email me please. Dennis Buck, Rudy Rodriguez, David Gage, Perry Palm, and Mike Jansen. I have yearbooks from both the '78 cruise and the '78 - '79 cruise. If any one is trying to remember a name or face, let me know, I'll copy a page for you.
Subject: USS Stein (FF-1065) Stein was a great ship, she is now serving the Mexican Navy along with the Shields. At least she is not being cut up like the Lockwood and others.
Subject: USS Stein (FF-1065) WOW, What a great site! I recognize many of the names. After seeing this web-site, a flood of great "Navy" memories have entered my thoughts, most of which revolve around the STEIN. I did two WestPac's aboard Stein and I still swear that Phuket Tailand is the greatest place on earth...or at least it was in 1989. Hey Tom "PC" Harris - your impression of the XO's "wistling lisp" was always hilarious. I still remember you telling me about being in that Oakridge Boys Video. It's funny the things you remember. What's Up Coomer - You were a great technician and I'm wondering if you are still doing something similar now. If you every get ahold of Fetterman please give him my e-mail address. Dan Bennett - I'm sure you're the CO of some ship by now. Do you hear from Scott O'connor or Pete? Mike Irwin - OSC??? Did I read that right? Coral Cook or Zino- If either of you are out there you better write!
Subject: USS Stein (FF-1065) A history of the STEIN would not be complete without mention of this "most critical" of missions...
"COCONUTS FOR RODRIGUEZ STEIN proved her versatility throughout numerous and varied assignments during the deployment. She successfully completed every commitment as scheduled and excelled in all evolutions. One particular and somewhat peculiar Indian Ocean assignment entailed the "embarkation" of 3,000 coconuts in Diego Garcia for subsequent delivery to Rodriguez Island. A coconut bin was assembled on the Main Deck aft of the Flight Deck and forward of the Basic Point Defense Missile Launcher. This bin was constructed upon STEIN'S initial visit to Subic Bay in early February 1978. Upon anchoring in Diego Garcia in March, the 3,000 coconuts were "embarked" from LCM boats alongside with the aid of a crane and cargo nets. The next morning, March 6, STEIN sailed for Rodriguez and anchored there on March 9, while sailors pitched 3,000 coconuts over the side into an empty barge."

Subject: USS Stein (FF-1065) Mark, I have a photo of the USS Stein FF-1065 taken about 1971 in Sydney, Australia during the ship's first West Pac. Subject: old Stein Crew member wants to find other crew members Hi Mark, I am at Mike Cleavenger's house, I was on the Stein from Dec. 1972-nov 1975. My rate was shipserviceman. I worked in the barbershop and the laundry. I was on two West Pacs, one in 1973 and 1974 thru 1975. Mike and Lance Gerneglia and I went on the 74-75 west pac on the Stein and Whipple and the Enterprise, we sure had alot of good times. I would like to see if any of my other buddies will log on to this site and give me a buzz. I would like to say hi to Sammie L. Moore, Craig Pettit, Lee Mc Fadden, Mike Spurlock, Norwin Smith, Mark Scott, Mac Mcgruder and all my other shipmates. I frequently think of the Stein and the good times that I had on the West pac when we went to Townsville Australia and Sydney. It was sure nice to get to a place where we could speak English with the natives. I will close for now and think of alot more to say next time. If any of my old shipmates are out there please feel free to e-mail me at "Slush Fund Mike" Cleavenger's e-mail address. Thanks alot,
Joe "The Barber" Burt

I know she has been decommissioned, but any help you can give me I sure would appreciate it. Thanks, Rick |
